Different Types of Eye Diseases

Eye disease can appear in different forms. Learning about the various forms of eye disease can help keep our patients informed and able to recognize some of the signs. Early recognition and diagnosis can make a big difference when it comes to eye disease.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve. The optic nerve plays an essential role in your sight, as it carries the information your retina receives to your brain, providing you with vision. Damage from glaucoma is usually caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye.

Glaucoma can occur at any age but is more common in older adults and is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60.

Common signs and symptoms of glaucoma can include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Severe headaches
  • Tunnel vision (In advanced stages)
  • Patchy blind spots in peripheral or central vision

At Insights Optical, we use technology to help manage glaucoma, such as:

  • Goldmann applanation tonometry—your eye doctor will use this test to detect changes in your eye pressure. This type of tonometry test is the most common and is considered the most accurate for measuring intraocular pressure.
  • Non-contact tonometry—your eye doctor will use an instrument to apply air pressure to slightly flatten your cornea. Brief puffs of air will be blown at your cornea to measure the pressure in your eye.

A cataract develops when the normally clear lens of your eye becomes clouded. A cataract begins forming when proteins in the eye form clumps that can prevent the lens from sending clear images to the retina.

Cataracts can make it more difficult to perform daily activities such as reading or driving a car. Common signs and symptoms of cataracts can include:

  • Double vision in the affected eye
  • Blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to glare
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Halos surrounding lights

Your eye doctor will perform a comprehensive eye exam to check for cataracts, including eye chart tests and tonometry to measure your eye pressure. Your doctor will also check your sensitivity to glare and perception of colors during the exam.

AMD is a progressive age-related condition that affects your central vision and causes damage to your macula. AMD is a common condition that is a leading cause of vision loss among older adults.

There are 2 main types of AMD to look out for:

    • Dry AMD is the most common form of the disease and occurs when the macula thins with age. Dry AMD progresses in 3 stages, early, intermediate, and late. Lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet or increased physical activity can help lower the risk of development.
  • Wet AMD is the less common form and is a later-stage form of AMD that causes faster and more severe vision loss. This form of AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow in the back of the eye and damage the macula.

AMD management depends on what stage the disease has progressed to and the type. Our team can stay caught up with your AMD situation through regular eye exams and determine what lifestyle changes can benefit you.

Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is an inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and covers the white of the eyes.

Conjunctivitis can be caused by bacterial or viral infections and allergic reactions. Conjunctivitis can be contagious and, in some cases, cause eye pain and severe redness.

Common signs and symptoms of conjunctivitis can include:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Eye redness
  • A gritty feeling in your eyes
  • A pus-like discharge
  • Tearing

Early diagnosis and treatment can help ease the discomfort of conjunctivitis and limit its spread. If you experience eye pain, blurred vision, and light sensitivity, it’s advised to contact us at Insights Optical for a comprehensive eye exam.
